A Royal Play by Play ...

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

It was not my intention to stay up all night,

After working my bar shift,

I stopped doing that long ago.

I like my sleep.

I only meant to say hi...

Three hours time difference,

And all the states away,

Across the Country,

Separated us,

Yet there we were

Together,

Watching.

I can't explain exactly why

My Mother,

Blue collar born of Upstate NY,

Was so drawn to the Royals.

Perhaps her Mother, Doris,

Donning her Sunday's best,

In blues and bonnets,

Reminded her of the Queen herself.

Or in my Moms prime,

She felt akin

To Princess Diana,

Her plight and strength,

Her beauty, and grace,

Her humanitarian efforts,

Her children,

Her hair,

HER Royal Wedding,

Long before her death,

The Princess-

My Mother was fascinated with her life.

I knew this.

My draw was less magnanimous,

But I loved my Mother,

And so we watched,

Apart and distant,

Together,

We oooohd,

We awed,

Like Rustic Country Folk,

Watching from afar-dreaming,

With Workmen hands tired and wrung

We watched the Pomp.

It's easy to think things are silly sometimes.

But I'm glad for the silly,

Because hard is just so heavy.

This film is from 5/19/2018

We had a Family visit just two weeks prior to this conversation

The first week of May 2018

A combo visit after her birthday 4/13

Before Mother's Day 5/10

Splitting the difference.

She was healthy

She was vibrant.

It was a beautiful visit.

I had just seen her two weeks before this Royal Wedding.

A landmark date...

5/19/2018

The World has changed,

In these last two years,

For the Royals,

For my Family,

For Communities...

I will always remember this conversation.

Etched in my heart,

Forever more.
