Magellan’s Fork

Updated: May 23, 2021

This is where they parted ways. Magellan he called her. Full of exploration and conceit. Unwavering in her vision and trust in the quest. “Are you sure you want to go that way?” Hands and feet seen quivering weekend by the illness & a lifetime of uncertainty. Lacking Trust in the process and Joy of discovery. Pulling the dog close, Maggie forged on. Never looking back. Not once. Finding footing trudging on the once warn overgrown secret path. Back to where the earth dipped and they still found laughter. Maggie took one step then another as the path opened ahead & cleared for her. She slid down the final stretch. An unspoken word between her and her only companion which she was ok with leaving too. Make a choice, her eyes dig deep into the baby Rhinos leg folds. Go back or stick with me. As her dog bit at her heels trying to slow her down. Maggie heard his echoing final pleads. “Stick to the road” He yelled after her. Afraid to follow. She carried on. Feeling stronger now. She began to run. Once again channeling that strength that hasn’t churned since her sporting days. The muscles may have forgotten. Buried deep below the porridge. The mind barely trembled churning so tired from failure grief & loss. Step by step. Her breathing quickened. Pace leveling out. She was once again soaring. Grateful mostly for those that knew her all along the way. There was no going back now. This is where they parted ways.
